Regardless of the type of pain that you suffer, it can keep you up at night. When you don't get a good night's rest, you will likely notice a change in behavior, ability to concentrate and much more. In some cases, your pain can be eliminated or significantly reduced simply by changing your sleeping position.

Sleeping on Your Back

If you like to sleep on your back, your spine experiences an increase in pressure. This is because the lower back is prone to significant arching in this position. In order to avoid this and the pain that comes with it, try slightly bending your knees. Eventually, your knees will fall. Therefore, you need to place a couple of pillows underneath your knees so this position can be held throughout the night.  This helps to alleviate some of that pressure on your spine so that you can get a better night's sleep.

Sleeping on Your Side

This is a good position to sleep in because it helps to keep the spine in proper alignment. Avoid bending your knees and curling into a ball. The reason for this is because the spine bends, which creates undesired pressure and pain. The spine needs to remain as neutral as possible from the neck down.

Sleep with Pillows Between Your Knees

Many people have heard of pregnant women sleeping with a pillow between their knees in order to get better sleep. The same can be said regarding pain-induced insomnia. When you are sleeping on your side, a pillow between the knees can help keep the pelvis and spine in good alignment. Plus, it keeps your knees from knocking against one another, which can be pretty uncomfortable.

Sleeping with Shoulder Pain

If you are having shoulder pain and prefer to lie on your side, then you may want to try rotating your shoulder slightly backward or forward. This helps to alleviate some of the pressure placed on the shoulder when on your side. If necessary, you can use a couple of extra pillows for additional support in order to maintain the position for the duration of the night.

Sleeping with Neck Pain

It can be hard to find the perfect position when you are kept up at night due to neck pain. One of the most helpful solutions is rolling up a small hand towel and placing it directly underneath the neck. This provides much-needed support for the neck. If you have trouble with the towel staying in place, you can always stuff it into your pillowcase.

Pain isn't easy to deal with. This is especially true when it's keeping you up at night. However, there are solutions to help you get that good sleep that you deserve.
