Proper oral care is important. You want to keep your teeth clean and healthy, so you follow all the proper guidelines enlisted to you by dentists, doctors, teacher, parents, and so on. However, even following the strictest rules, you aren't guaranteed to have no issues regarding your teeth.

Sometimes your teeth will grow in wrong and you'll require the assistance of an orthodontist to fix the problems. The orthodontist will schedule a consultation visit before you get braces. They will discuss the types of braces, taking care of the braces, and other concerns you have.

Types of Braces

The first visit with your orthodontist with involve discussing the type of braces are available and what type works best for you. Some of the available choices are:

1. Metal: Metal braces are the most traditionally used type of braces. They consist of small metal brackets attached to the teeth with wires connecting them all together. Although all braces are expensive, the metal ones are usually the cheapest kind to get.

2. Lingual: Lingual braces use the metal wire and bracket design, but they are placed behind the teeth instead of in front. They aren't noticeable at all. The lingual braces are a lot harder to clean and not as comfortable as ceramic or traditional metal braces.

3. Ceramic: Ceramic braces use the same bracket and wire design as the metal braces, but they are made out of a different material. The brackets and wires are white or clear to help them blend in so they aren't noticeable. However, if you don't take care of them probably, they will stain and ruin the effect of being unnoticeable.

4. Invisalign: Invisalign braces are designed to be invisible while aligning the teeth – hence the name. It is a system that uses a series of custom mouth guards placed over the teeth. The aligners are easily removed from the mouth. Every two weeks the aligners will be adjusted and replaced with new ones. It is one of the most expensive options and not available for children.

Factors to Consider

There are several different factors to consider when you are choosing the type of braces you want. One of the biggest factors is cost. A lot of people have to pay out of pocket for orthodontist services. Since you need to see the orthodontist quite often for adjustments, this can add up very quickly. This means you may end up with traditional braces as default since it's usually cheaper. If you are lucky, you may be able to afford all the costs or you may even get your insurance to pay for some if not all the costs. Always check with your insurance company to see what is covered and by who.
