Are you getting ready to have gastric bypass surgery? Gastric bypass surgery could be just what you need to get your weight under control. However, when you need to have any kind of surgery, it is only natural to be a bit apprehensive. If you're feeling a bit anxious about what you will and will not be able to eat after your surgery, then you need to get informed. The more information you have about your diet after the surgery, the more you will be able to put your mind at ease.
A Liquid Diet
Immediately after surgery, your doctor will probably recommend that you have a liquid diet. This is to allow your stomach time to heal. You will not be allowed to drink a lot of liquids all at once. Your doctor will advise you on how much to drink immediately after surgery.
Your doctor will probably recommend that you have some light soup and sugarless juice to start with. You should make sure you stock up on these items before your surgery. You can even make light soup or a broth and put it in the freezer so that when you are ready, all you have to do is warm it up. This will prevent you from having to cook while you are recovering.
A Pureed Diet
Once your doctor decides that you are ready, you will move on to eating pureed food. Pureed food is a bit thicker than liquids and you will be able to tolerate it once your stomach starts feeling a bit better.
Pureed food is not difficult to make and you can use a blender or food processor to help. Take a look at the food that you like and see which ones can be pureed. Discuss it with your doctor first, as there are some foods that you should not eat.
A Diet of Soft Food
As you progress with your healing, your doctor will graduate you to soft food. These foods will be soft and easy to chew. You may be able to eat food such as boiled eggs and canned fruits. At this stage, you will still be asked to eat in small proportions so as not to upset your stomach.
Gradually your doctor will allow you to start eating regular food again. However, this may take a few months and you will need to be patient. Gastric bypass surgery is a great option if you want to control your weight and stay healthy. Once you take the time to ensure that you eat a proper diet during your recovery, you should heal well following surgery.
